it's late at night, but i just bought a ton of new music and i needed to tell someone about it. woo!! i'm going to vegas for a week for werk, hopefully all this glorious new music will be at my door when i arrive back here on friday (chard's moving in on saturday). every so often i completely reinvent my dj sound; when i first moved to san francisco i was doing nothing but rare groove, most recently in the last year i've been doing a hip hop thing, now i've been paying attention to a lot of new shit between dyanmo productions, boca 45, dr. rubberfunk, kraak en smaak.. well, yes, i know you haven't heard of any of these people. that's the fucking point! i'm going to introduce you to their music with delicious dj sets. i hope to debut my new acoustic menu du jour on the first thursday in june @ wish. be there or be there ;)

    Roan ponds
    Puddles beneath my feet

    Blinded by ashes

    A clement flight of fancy
    Among nightmares of the ordinary
Or the recur of a scarlet past

    For the kindling still shone
    Through the damp verdant
    Unlike those before

I was quick to add tinder

Not for fear of the cold
But of affection for the fire

    insanity
i've always been greatly influenced by the people i respect in my life who are gracious enough to befriend me. i've learned so much about sound engineering from gilmore -- i had this project, a payola track that i had to produce before 8am PST. I got home from work at 6:30pm and started working on the song at 7:30pm. I was done at 2am and even though it may not be my greatest song, it's definately the best engineering work i've ever done -- the song itself is kindof funny, it's chardmo and i rapping. remember, the whole thing was done from scratch in six and a half hours! feel free to check it out and comment: http://www.trancenden.com/luke/beats-on-it.mp3

    Dear German Spammer..
I recognize that you hate the gays, jews, blacks, and everyone else who's fault it is that Germany is going down the pits. Everyone except for the real white German citizen who is dedicated, efficient, focused, intelligent, and just gosh darn better than everyone else. However, I only really need one e-mail to understand your feelings. So far you've sent me like five million. I understand you really want to drive the point home, but I swear, I get it. Thanks.

Tal's Infamous Four-Alarm Atlantic City Chili
I got this recipe from a chef in Atlantic City, so it's not really mine -- this is totally a yankee chili in that it uses rice and beans, but I'm a yankee, so fuck off

    Ingredients:

1/2 lb chicken hearts (any chicken parts can be used except livers)
    1/2 lb sirloin steak cubes
    1/2 lb lean ground beef

32 oz can Bush's Bold & Spicy baked beans
16-20 oz can kidney beans (any brand)
16-20 oz can black beans (any brand)
28 oz can whole peeled tomatoes (any brand)

    2 cups uncooked instant rice

    Vegetables:

2 large onions (red and/or yellow), chopped
3 shallots, 1 chopped, two whole.
    4 cloves garlic, diced

    Seasonings:

    fresh basil
    12 tbs Tabasco sauce
    9 tbs Worcester sauce
    2 tbs chili powder
    2 tbs paprika (Hungarian recommended)
    9 dried chili peppers
    cooking oil

    Preparation:

    Cook rice.
Chop vegetables. Cut chicken into 1" pieces (if chicken hearts are used, leave whole). Open cans.

In a large pot, empty contents of all cans (including liquid), rice, 1 chopped clove of garlic, half an onion, and half a chopped shallot. Add 1/3 of spices at this time. Simmer over low heat.

    In a large skillet,

    1. brown beef cubes in oil. Add to chili.
    2. Saute remaining vegetables and chicken until cooked through. Add to chili.
    3. cook ground beef. Add to chili.

Bring chili to a boil, reduce heat to medium. Add 1/2 of remaining spices. Cover and simmer, stirring as necessary, for 90 minutes.

Add remaining spices to taste. Simmer chili on low for at least an hour. The more time, the better. Stir, let cool, and store in fridge for 24 hours. Reheat, stir, and serve.

    summary (sortof)
so what i've learned at wmc:

    1. The name Trancenden sucks.. Jim Welch, some hotshot A&R vice president of vice presidents from Arista was all like, "hey kiddo, your music rocks, but your name is teh sux." ok, he didn't say it exactly that way, but with him and DJ harry, which is apparently the official remixer dude for string cheese incident, both complimenting my track ("Never Leave" is the song they heard)and dissing the Trancenden name, along with the fact that I had to keep explaining to people that "no, I don't make Trance, yes, I know I'm called Trancenden" -- I've decided to change my name to my name, that is, Trancenden is gone, long live Tal M. Klein -- when we reprint PLB, it'll be a Tal M. Klein album, not Trancenden. When Chu Chin Chow, Klein vs. Peltz, and ALPHA-BEATS are released, they will be released under Tal M. Klein -- so that's that.

    2. I hate Robbins Entertainment and everything they put out. Though I did develop a minor crush on one of their employee girls, but she lives in New York, IT COULD NEVER BEEEEE. Also, I don't make cheesy dance remixes, so while I would be kicking on the Barry White and doing my doughboy striptease, she would be dressed in black latex carrying a whip, with a DJ Radiofriendly remix of Brittney Spears and Madonna making out blaring in the background. It's not the latex and the whip I mind so much, but spare me the Clearchannel top 40 "house" remixes plz, that shit is like the anti-viagra.

    3. WMC is not the right conference for me. I need to go to the sort of conference Ninja Tune attends. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I need a conference in America, folks, I already know about the European ones.

    4. We secured a vinyl distributer, which makes me feel much better. But we still need a cd distributer, which keeps me up at night considering I'm about to spend $30k on promoting an album that may not be available for purchase in stores.

    5. I love Florida, but I'm homesick.

    Chu Chin Chow for now..

    yay
i just found this record store: http://mararecord.gemm.com/ -- which carries every title i've been looking for since coming back from europe. i just placed an order for like a million dollars or something of rare funk brazillian records. i can't wait to spin this shit!

in other news, i know what i said before, but i take it all back. alphabeats is still not done, i'm still not completely happy with the final mixes. i'm going to leave it alone for a while, since i don't really have to release it until november, and start focusing on winter music conference and the chu chin chow 12" which i hope will come out in april or may.

i've also had a cist removed from my head, so it hurts a lot. and i think i have a sore throat again. i need chicken soup and sex. in either order.

    ugh
well, i'm quitting smoking... i quit on my birthday 11/30 -- and it's driving me crazy ..

in typical "Tal quits smoking" form, I called the girl I'm dating to complain about the stress of quitting smoking, hoping she'd perhaps say something comforting like... "I don't want to see you anymore." wait no, that's not what I was hoping she'd say, that's what she actually said.

so yeah, i'm already a ball of nicotine-fiending stress and now i'm not getting laid either.

somehow i'm too busy to be upset or depressed about it, i'm just angry. but i've been angry since i quit smoking so i can hardly tell the difference. i don't feel used or confused or anything like that, i'm just angry that i'm not getting any and i was really looking forward to getting some.

otherwise, things are going great. lots of fantastic progress on the album -- the raven video for 'don't' should be done this week sometime. videos in the works: jb for 'underneath the floor' and a guy named paul for 'lo-fi high' (i hope). we're going to start shopping the chu-chin-chow 12" to distro's and stores soon. started working with potty on the cover. need to do a onesheet with chard within the next two weeks.alphabeats cover art should be all but done by this thursday.. things are moving along nicely. just finished editing the track i did with bigside, just added some sick 808 kicks (boooooooooooooooooooooooom) in choice parts of the song.

mp3.com goes down tomorrow... the end of an era. i was artist #19 on that fucking site. man, robertson, you're a fucker. need to find a new home for the back catalog. boo hoo. can i please go back to glasgow now?

    LA story
just came back from LA where i got to shoot my first music video. well, it was mostly focused on Hillary and AJ because.. well.. even though i wrote and produced and composed the song, if you tried to make a video about what it was that i did, it would be boring. who wants to see some pudgy idiot hunched over his pc at 3 in the morning carefully slicing up drum samples and programming midi lines? not me! :) there was some discussion with raven (the director) earlier about me having a prop like a keyboard or turntables, but whatever, it's not my thing -- i didn't even play the midi lines on this track, i programmed them in, and there isn't even a single record scratch on the track, so i opted for the purist/pop approach. as much as I like the limelight, i also recgonize when it's important to step back and let the public have what they want; a hot female singer with a great voice and her melancholy guitarist.. i had a couple of cameos in the video, smoking cigarettes (which i apparently do well, even though i'm quitting on nov. 30 -- my bday) and putting them out. tomorrow (which is really just later today) i go to the sobay to rehearse some more for the nov. 16 show. i'm certainly living the rockstar lifestyle, now i just need the money to start flowing in order to complete the picture. i love my life!

    blast from the now
of course, i'm back from europe... going to LA to shoot a video for "don't" (pardon me if i don't include a link, it's easy to find on the net), it's being directed by Michael Raven who is the king of adult movie directors, but this is going to be a music video with no porn in it, so it should be interesting. otherwise, finished the track with dano for our upcoming 12" on red melon, still working on the track with fred, though it's nearly done, and started a new track with jz.. these are all project independant of alphabeats, but equally important in their own right. we're doing a t.vs.T show on nov. 16 which is going to be awesome, we had our first rehearsal since before chillits last week (i still need to put up a chillits gallery somewhere) and we sounded as tight as if not tighter than ever, so this pantsgiving thing should be a big success, thank you djpie! alphabeats is so close to being done i can see the end in the horizon, i hate this stage of things, when it's only a bunch of little hurdles in my path that seem to be harder to jump than any of the big initial hurdles in my way back when this whole crazy scheme started. thank god for my friends, the beautiful thing about them is that they are so empowering, i don't think they'd let me fail even if i tried. life is truly good.

    tired
the mail lost the soundtrack i made, so i get an extra night to polish it up. most people say, "who cares, it's a porn soundtrack" and they're probably right, but i can't allow myself to do a halfass job. i wonder if anyone i don't know who listens to my music ever accidentally comes across this blog. i'm always worried about being too human to be a rockstar :) i think i'm having male pms or something, i'm all depressed and irritated at the world for no good reason, and i feel like i'm a terrible failure even though i know that i'm not. this is very unlike me which probably means i'm either hungry or need a cigarette. stupid tal. chard's talking crystal ball assures me i'll be alright soon. i want to be back from europe already, i'm so dreading the trip... i wish i could go with friends..

    pressure
europe tour: ibiza, berlin, munich, london, bristol, glasgow, cork
i can't believe i'm being flown out and paid to spin records in other countries
all my friends are so excited, i am not so much... i hate flying, and i get to spend very little time in each of the places, except for glasgow where i am spending some time with the jayas and hopefully run into craig allen and danny k
i am looking forward to it, but it's causing me a lot of stress
i am dating a new girl. i like her.

we're doing a t.vs.T show in chillits, a dream come true

i need to finish this jordache song with dano before i go. also, i owe wicked a whole soundtrack with hillary, then they're going to make a video for 'don't' and include it on the dvd. should be cool. i love making soundtracks. apprently some magazine is doing a story on the movie and they wanted a presskit picture of my 'band' (the one where hillary is the singer and i am the 'band'), which one should i use: http://wander.org/gallery/tal_and_hillary (i like this one the best: http://wander.org/gallery/tal_and_hillary/DSCN9284_bw)

i also have to finish that song with fred before i go.

september 18, the day of departure seems so close, there is so much to do...

and when i get back, i only get a short break before it's time to party again at big sur.

i know, i'm sure you think i'm a prick for complaining about things other people wish they could do, but it's just hard to do everything in one sitting...

parents are coming over in november... and we have a t.vs.T show in november too... nearly every day from now until december is accounted for, and then in december, i need to start mastering the alphabeats album and get the art together, find a distributer or a label and then... maybe after the 2004 WMC and my eventual trip to Israel following it, but before the album is actually released, I will have some random free time.

At least the girl I'm dating is as busy as I am, so she understands. Or at least, I hope she does...

    hillary hightower
we just had an awesome recording session on sunday, hillary's first penned lyrics for our (tentatively titled) 'sunset dawn' project:

    close your eyes
to keep it all inside you
    his words are falling
    puddles on the floor
    if you'd only known
the last time was the best time
    you could have savored
    what left you wanting more

    (chorus:)
    freeway
the lights are coming at you
    the lines are blurred
    heartbreak is blinding
you don't know where to go
    you only pray to God
    to get you safely home

    remember
the feel of his weight on you
    as he whispered
the lies that made you love
    letting go
of dreams that kept you going
    but they won't leave you
    they're hanging right above you

    freeway... (chorus)

    give it up
you know that he won't call you
    you were blind to
    how you were being used
    don't you know
    they can't resist temptation
    if you're a fantasy
    you're only bound to lose

    freeway... (chorus)

this girl is good! the song i wrote seems to pale in comparison, but it's a tight groove nonetheless:

    come in through the window
and i'll show you to the door
there's a devil in the basement
    underneath the floor

    devil in the basement
    don't look into her eyes
or she'll know just what you want
    and your demons will arise

    devil in the basement
oh i wish she'd go away
i tried to talk to her
but she's got nothing left to say

    come in through the window
    i'm going down to hell
close the door on your way out
and tell the world i wish it well

:) anyhoo, now that we have vocals, we need arrangement and instruments, at least a.j.'s here to help

    in case you were wondering
i am totally voting for arnold in the elections, i've long held that since politicians are just puppets anyway, we should hae actors fill their roles in real life not just in movies. this will make cspan seem more like hbo, especially if arnold is king of california and stallone is king of chicago and deniro is king of new york, i think it would totally get people into being involved with politics and i think we should force political actors to continue making movies while in office so that box office sales can tell them how good of a job they're doing. remember, zaphod was king of the universe, and the universe got along just fine.

    buh
i don't post here anymore, everyone kept sending me e-mail instead of commenting on my journal. also, i like friendster more. i'm not much of a journal keeper, if i ever write an autobiography, i'll need an editor to ghostwrite it for me. i'm working a lot on the album, i just finished making a recorded mix of some tracks but i realized after the fact that i mixed in one of the tracks too quietly, so i'll have to do it again tomorrow. oh well, it's a good mix, well worthy of being played again. things are going really well, hillary (singer from don't) is coming over next week to do more songs with me for a porn (read: adult) movie soundtrack (i am all over the 2004 avn's people, if i don't win in 2004, i will be tres upset). i got ryan's brother to come in from the central valley to play guitar... i think i've got the roots of at least 4 phat songs, though writing lyrics is hard. i finilized details for my mini-european tour today (not only do i get to hang with irian jaya in glasgow, but i get to be at my buddy mike's wedding in ireland!! how sick is that?). i need to finish doing that jordache track for saturday so dano can play it at the redmelon boat party. i keep reading the klf's the manual and wondering what it'd be like if i really focused on making pop music. i am a level 60 force on pso. see, geeks can be cool.
